Timber Roots

“Traditional green oak framing and building conservation work to modern carpentry and joinery.”

About Howard of Timber roots Carpentry,

For me, Timber Roots is a culmination of a journey into traditional building techniques. Starting out at a young age, I completed my apprenticeship under the watchful eye of my father back in 2009.

I was then invited to train with the Princes Foundation and completed my building craft apprenticeship learning traditional techniques; one of only ten people selected yearly from across the UK. It was here that I learned the plight of our built heritage and developed a passion for traditional building techniques; expanding my knowledge of working with lime and learning about traditional timber framing, amongst other skills. I had the opportunity to work across the UK on some prestigious buildings, one of which was Lincoln cathedral, and with master craftsman Alan Ritchie of Hewnwood.

After I graduated from the course, I was invited to help co-ordinate a charity project for the Princes Foundation in Jamaica, where we taught traditional building techniques to 30 young Jamaicans in downtown Kingston.

Returning from Jamaica I was invited to hone my skills working with Master Craftsman Alan Ritchie once again where I worked for several years learning the complexities of traditional timber framing.

In 2015, I moved back to West Wales where I started work as the workshop manager at a sustainable sawmill. We built timber frame structures and milled sustainable locally sourced timber, combining two of my passions; timber construction and sustainable practices.

I truly believe in the consumable world we live in; change happens at a grass roots level. Sourcing our construction materials responsibly and using construction methods that lock carbon in are the best way forward to protect our world for future generations whilst also leaving beautiful hand crafted structures as a legacy.

I now run Timber Roots Carpentry where we not only have a passion for traditional timber frame structures but also for our built heritage and the environment. We work not only locally but nationally, working with passionate and ethical small local suppliers to create amazing buildings on time and within budget.
